Rules
For the 2004 Contests
(To
refresh your memory or to settle any questions you may have)
We will
again have prizes for two categories of nonfiction: General and Travel.
Stories must be between 1500 and 5000 words in length.
Contest entries will be accepted from October 1, 2003, through September
30, 2004.
All contest entries will be posted on this web site.
No story may be entered in more than one contest. The writer must
choose one or the other.
A writer may enter up to three stories in each contest. There will
be no entry fee for the first story, but an fee of
$5 (U.S.) will be
required for each additional story in the same category.
All entry fees will be applied exclusively toward contest prizes.
Fees can be paid by check or by credit card.
Click
here for credit card payment information.
(Note: Over half of the 2004 contest prize money
came from donations by our
members.
Any
of you fortunate enough to be able to help us finance the award program

the prizes for future contests.)
First prize in each category will be $100. First runner-up, honorable
mentions, and finalists in each category will receive certificates of recognition
suitable for framing.
How
to submit a story
General
Nonfiction Contest
Any
appropriate nonfiction topic is eligible. Stories entered in previous
general nonfiction contests will not be eligible for the 2004 contest unless
they have been extensively revised. Stories entered in one
of our previous
travel story contests
are eligible for the 2004 general nonfiction contest if they are otherwise
qualified.
Travel
Nonfiction Contest
Stories
should be true accounts of a trip taken by the author or someone known
personally by the author. Stories
entered in previous
travel story contests are ineligible for the 2004 contest unless they have
been extensively revised.
Stories previously
entered in one of our general nonfiction contests are eligible for
the 2004 travel story contest if
they are otherwise
qualified.
*Unpublished
Writers, Eligibility, And Other Matters
For
purposes of these contests, unpublished writers are defined as those whose
creative writing (as opposed to their
journalism)
has never produced revenues of over $500 in any single year. The
Preservation Foundation has sole
authority
to rule on any writer's eligibility, the appropriateness of stories for
entry, changes in contest rules, and all
other
matters relating to the contest.
Fiction
And Cat Stories
We
will continue to accept fictional stories for display on the site and all
fiction posted since our last fiction
contest will be eligible
for any new contests we may announce. However, we have not
sponsored a fiction
contest since 2000.
We will also continue to accept cat stories. We got into them early
on and actually published a book of
them! Click
here to learn more about it! Any cat story received can be posted
under fiction, nonfiction (you
might want to enter
it in the current contest), or in the cat story section. All new
cat stories will be eligible for
any future cat story
contest we may sponsor.
These
decisions are based on our belief that many Internet sites now offer programs
for writers of fiction,
while
very few encourage nonfiction. We believe too that writers of fiction are
also capable of writing about
real
events in their own lives and the lives of those they know. So get
busy and prove us right!
Regular
Story Submissions--No Limit
While
there is a limit of 3 entries in the contests, writers should continue
to submit non-contest stories for
display
on our site. There is no limit. Our purpose is to publish your
works and you don't have to enter any
contests
whatsoever for us to do that.
