HELPFUL RESOURCES FOR WRITERS

There are literally thousands of sites out there claiming to offer an easy way to (a) learn how to write, (b) get your written work published, or, (c) sell, distribute, promote, or otherwise grow rich and famous through the success of your writing.

The Preservation Foundation will not list any resources that we feel may be more interested in the writer's money than his/her welfare. The resources we are listing here are those we or some of our members have personally found to be beneficial.

If a site that has helped you is not listed here, please let us know about it. Many hands make work easy, so give us a hand.

But, if you have a bad experience with a site listed here, please tell us. We will investigate and attempt to correct the problem. If we cannot get satisfactory measures taken for you we will remove the link from this listing.

Frugal Reader

This is a site that enables you to swap books with other book lovers. You list two books you'd like to swap and then find two you'd like to get. When someone asks for one of your books you send it by media mail which costs $1.42 (shipping inside the U. S.) for one pound or less. It's simple and may be a good way to get a book you can't find in the local library or would like to keep. Check out the details on the site. Before you join it might be prudent to brouse around a bit to see if the kind of books you like are generally available. Some categories are pretty slim as yet.

We no longer recommend this resource since two of our writers have had negative experiences with them. If you'd like details contact us and we will be glad to put you in touch with the writers themselves.

Publishers Marketing Association

This is a nonprofit trade association of independent publishers. Remember, if you publish your own book that's exactly what you'll be. Their newsletter is extremely interesting if you need ideas on how to promote your book and yourself. We are members of PMA and have found the cost to be a worthwhile expense.

Webmonkey

This is a great how-to site. Here you can learn how-to-do almost anything that can be done on the web. Click on this link and you'll be taken to Webmonkey's DESIGN section. This contains tutorials that can teach you how to use some of those confusing programs you bought but never used because they came without good directions. Here's where you can find step-by-step directions. There's a tutorial on PHOTOSHOP that I've needed for a long time. Thanks, Webmonkey! While some of this is pretty advanced for the average writer, there's plenty of basic information anyone can dip in and try. Sample some of this interesting soup. You might find something that hits the spot.
